What is a Conservation Area
Conservation Areas are designated by Local Planning Authorities and constitute areas with special architectural or historic interest, the character and appearance of which are desirable to preserve or enhance. If your property or site lies within a Conservation Area it does not necessarily mean that development is unacceptable. However, it does introduce an additional constraint to development, with an onus on the proposed scheme to either preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the Conservation Area. Undertaking development works in a Conservation Area should not be mistaken for Conservation Area Consent, which is necessary where demolition works above specified thresholds are proposed.
If you are considering developing within a Conservation Area please contact us for an initial free discussion. Pre-Application discussions are strongly recommended as it is important to try and secure the support of the Council’s Conservation Officer.
